Introduction to the Canadian Rockies
The Canadian Rockies are one of Canada’s most iconic destinations, and some of the most visited Rocky Mountain parks are in Alberta. Alberta’s alpine region is known for dramatic mountain landscapes, turquoise lakes, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. From world-famous national parks to quieter areas off the beaten path, this region offers something for every type of adventurer.
This guide brings together our favourite experiences in the Canadian Rockies, with a focus on practical, family-friendly adventures and real-life stories from this beautiful place.
Plan Your Trip to the Canadian Rockies
The Canadian Rockies in Alberta offer outdoor activities and memorable experiences in every season. Things can get busy, and there are a few things to consider while planning your trip.
When to visit? June through September is the most popular time to visit for hiking and camping, but in early June, there will still be snow at alpine levels. The winter offers quieter towns, trails, snow-covered scenery, and world-class downhill skiing in Jasper, Banff, and Castle Mountain Provincial Park.
Getting around: A vehicle is recommended for accessing trailheads, lakes and campgrounds. Areas in Banff get very busy in the summer, including Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, and taking a shuttle to these areas is often required.
What to pack: Weather can change very quickly in the Rocky Mountains, so be prepared for sun or snow no matter what time of year it is! Bring layers, rain or snow gear (depending on the season), sturdy footwear and if you’re heading out on the trails, don’t forget your bear spray.
Travelling with kids: From hiking, paddling, beach days, bike rides and interpretive programming from Parks Canada, you’ll have no trouble filling the itinerary for a family adventure. For a successful trip, we recommend choosing shorter hikes, giving yourself extra time between activities and let your kids take the lead on some of the exploring.
